A White House official has denied reports that President Donald Trump had decided not to relocate the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, saying that the final decision in the matter has not yet been made.
On Wednesday it was reported that the president had ruled against the move, despite having promised during the 2016 campaign to implement the 1995 Jerusalem Embassy Act, which calls for the relocation of the embassy and the formal recognition of Jerusalem as the united capital of Israel.
According to a report by Bloomberg, a senior Trump administration official said the White House had ruled out the move, at least for the time being.
“We don’t think it would be wise to do it at this time,” the official said. “We’ve been very clear what our position is and what we would like to see done, but we’re not looking to provoke anyone when everyone’s playing really nice.”
But on Thursday, a second White House official denied the claim, saying that no decision had been reached on the future of the US Embassy in Israel.
“Contrary to media reports, President Trump has not yet made a decision on moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and doesn’t plan on making a decision on this issue until after his visit.”
President Donald Trump is scheduled to arrive in Israel next Monday for a two-day, one-night visit. The visit is part of a three-state tour by the president, and is his first to Israel since taking office.
